The BlueTools project will take part in BIOSPAIN 2026 in Bilbao, one of Europe’s leading biotechnology events. Together with our Horizon Europe sister project BlueRemediomics, BlueTools will host the session “Blue Meets Green: Innovations for the Circular Bioeconomy from EU‑Funded Research on Marine Microbiomes”. The session shows how marine microbiome research can be turned into sustainable products, processes and ecosystem services.
Marine microbiomes: an untapped resource for biotechnology
Marine microbiomes perform essential ecological functions and hold a largely unexplored reservoir of enzymes, bioactive compounds, microorganisms and genes. Yet their industrial potential remains limited. Many marine microorganisms are difficult to cultivate, datasets are complex, screening is slow and conventional biodiscovery is resource intensive.
BlueTools and BlueRemediomics tackle these barriers with complementary expertise in sampling, cultivation, metagenomics, bioinformatics, high‑throughput screening, product discovery, sustainability and responsible access to marine genetic resources.
What to expect from the session
Aurelio Hidalgo (BlueTools) and Laureen Bascou (BlueRemediomics) will present the projects’ main approaches, key findings and application opportunities. The focus is on practical routes from research to market, including industrial uptake, joint validation, licensing and research collaboration.
The session is designed for biotechnology companies, researchers, investors and technology transfer professionals who want to explore how blue biotechnology can support the green transition and the circular bioeconomy.
One of Europe’s largest biotech partnering events
BIOSPAIN is one of the largest biotech events organised by a national bioindustry association in Europe. It also ranks among the largest in the world by the number of one‑to‑one partnering meetings and participating companies. At the previous edition, 30% of delegates came from outside Spain, and 32% of the 287 exhibitors were international.
This year, the conference comes to Bilbao, one of Spain’s main biotech clusters and one of its most avant‑garde cities. BIOSPAIN 2026 takes place in Pavilion 2 of the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC) in Barakaldo. Located less than 20 minutes from central Bilbao, the BEC is one of the largest and most modern trade fair complexes in Europe.
